My travel throughout the Middle East has been and is an ongoing education something Westerners should make time to do ASAP. ” ~ Phillip George
Phillip George, an Australian artist, produced a series of surfboards in Islamic patterns to promote better understanding between East and West. He was inspired by his travels to the Middle East and by the 2005 riots during which Lebanese Australians became the target of harassment on a beach in Sydney.
He called the 30 surfboards, each decorated with Islamic motives and iconography of historic mosques he visited, Insha`allah (God Willing) surfboards. It is an attempt at merging Australian beach culture and Islamic culture. The surfboards are lined up facing Mecca.
